Progress percentage compares the amount completed with the target. It is useful for savings goals, project milestones, fundraising, reading lists, and fitness plans.
Divide completed by target
If you have completed 42 tasks out of a target of 60, calculate 42 ÷ 60 × 100. Progress is 70%.
Find the amount remaining
Subtract completed progress from the target. With 42 of 60 tasks complete, 18 remain. The remaining percentage is 30%.
Allow progress above 100%
Exceeding a target can produce a valid result above 100%. Saving $1,200 toward a $1,000 goal means you reached 120% of the target.
Choose a meaningful target
A percentage can look precise even when the target is arbitrary. Record when the goal was set and update it transparently if its scope changes.
A calculator is often the quickest way to check your mental math. The important part is using the right starting value.
